Finding ways to connect with your children over long distances

On Behalf of | Oct 12, 2018 | Family Law

Long-distance parenting is very challenging. For the parents who have to embark upon this, trying to find ways to make the situation work is imperative. It might take some trial and error, but most parents will soon realize that it is well worth it.

When you aren’t living close to your child, you won’t be able to make things work alone. Instead, your ex is going to have to lend a hand. This is because you will need assistance to get the schedule and everything else worked out. The other parent will also need to let you know what’s going on when you can’t be there.

It is a good idea to put the long-distance parenting plan into your child custody agreement. This will set clear expectations for what needs to happen. While it might not be possible to put a firm schedule for virtual visits in the order, you can have a frequency set. For example, you might want a virtual visit with your children every other day or once a week.

There are many ways that you might be able to handle virtual visits. Video chats are a common option since they enable you and the children to see each other even when you can’t be together. You might also use emails, texts and phone calls to keep in touch. These enable you to help with homework, celebrate important events and even read storybooks to your children.

Even though you are parenting from a distance, you have to think about what is best for the children. This has to be a primary factor in every point of your custody case.
